Eli had strict instructions for how to get to Termini, the main train station in Rome. He took a taxi to an old building adjacent to the Biblioteca Nationale Centrale di Roma, just a few blocks away. He looked for the door on the southwest corner of the building and just as the instructions had indicated, the door was unlocked. Eli slipped into the building and walked down a hall that ran parallel to the back wall of the library next door. Before the end of the hall, he came across a small metal gate secured by a lock and chain. Just as the directions provided, he pulled at the lock and it popped open, allowing him to open the gate and get through.
A set of stairs led straight down a narrow hall that ran all the way to Termini. When he emerged at the other end, the door opened up to a part of the train station that most people never get to see. There were several trains parked at this section of the station, but all of them had their lights turned off, except one.
Eli approached the train with caution as a distinguished looking gentleman walked out of one of the cars.
He spoke in Italian. âHello, Eli. You are right on time. My name is Paolo. I am the CEO of EuroTran. This train will take you north to the border with Austria, where you will meet with someone tasked with getting you quickly through the mountains to Innsbruck. This is our fastest train. It should get you there in two hours. The operator has all the necessary instructions.â
Paolo took one step closer, put his hand on Eliâs shoulder, and looked him squarely in his eyes. âMany people are counting on you. Remember to stay vigilant and remain resolute. These are troubled times. Now go. You donât have a lot of time.â
Eli found it interesting that Paolo chose the same words that Florianne had used on the phone call a few days ago. Vigilant and resolute. He also detected a sadness in Paoloâs eyes as they parted ways. Paolo seemed to know a lot more about what was happening than he let on.
A few moments later, the train pulled out of Roma Termini, heading north at two hundred miles an hour. Eli was the only passenger on board.
